Holistic Skincare for Timeless Beauty: Age Gracefully with Facial Cupping and Gua Sha

Holistic Skincare - What is Facial Cupping and Gua Sha?

Holistic approaches to skincare are making a comeback. Among the many options for natural, non-invasive beauty treatments, facial cupping and gua sha are notable contenders. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) facial cupping and gua sha offer unique benefits for skin health and overall well-being. When the techniques are combined, they compliment each other to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment and provide a more comprehensive skincare and healing experience.

Facial cupping is a very gentle, non-invasive technique. The cups are very small in size and gently lift the skin and underlying tissues. This increases blood flow, delivers oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, aids in lymphatic drainage, aids in detoxification, and reduces puffiness in the face.

Facial Gua Sha is also very gentle and non-invasive. A smooth-edged tool is used to gently scrape over the skin in upward and outward strokes. The pressure used is firm, yet gentle enough that it does not leave any marks and is still very relaxing. The gua sha strokes are repeated several times over one area.

Benefits of Facial Cupping and Gua Sha

  1. Improved Circulation

    • The suction of the facial cups and the scraping of the gua sha tool both stimulate blood flow which promotes circulation and delivers oxygen rich blood and nutrients to the skin cells.

  2. Enhanced Lymphatic Drainage

    • Together facial cupping and facial gua, promote lymphatic drainage, leading to reduced puffiness and congestion in the face, vibrant skin tone, and a more sculpted appearance.

  3. Muscle Relaxation and Tension Relief

    • When techniques are combined, facial muscles relax and release tension, which improves facial tone, softens fine lines and wrinkles, and reduces signs of aging.

  4. Promote Collagen Production

    • Facial Cupping and Gua Sha support collagen production, which leads to improved elasticity, smoother skin, firmer skin, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and a more youthful appearance.

  5. Overall Skin Health and Radiance

    • By combining Facial Cupping and Facial Gua Sha, individuals can experience comprehensive benefits for their skin. These benefits include improved circulation, lymphatic drainage, decreased puffiness, muscle relaxation, decreased fine lines and wrinkles, improved collagen production, and a more radiant and youthful appearance.

What can I expect during a session?

Exploring facial cupping and gua sha under the guidance of an acupuncturist can be a transformative experience for your skin and overall well-being. These TCM techniques not only enhance your facial appearance but also promote relaxation and health. Here’s what you can expect during a session that incorporates both facial cupping and gua sha.

  • Preparing for the Session

    • Before you come for your first session there are a few things to note:

      • Eat a small meal a few hours before your session.

      • Drink plenty of water.

      • Wear comfortable clothing.

      • If possible, come to the office with hair tied up and face free of makeup.

  • Initial Consultation

    • Your first session will include an intake that includes a thorough health and facial history. We will also discuss your goals for treatment. This part usually takes about 30-45 minutes.

    • It is highly recommended that “before” pictures are also taken at your first session.

    • Your acupuncturist will create a TCM evaluation using information provided during your intake, along with an examination of pulse and tongue, to better understand your overall health and identify any root issues.

  • The Treatment Room

    • At Honey Bee Acupuncture, you can expect a calm environment that is designed to help you relax; dark walls, dim lighting, soft music, and a comfortable treatment table.

  • During the Session

    • If also receiving body acupuncture, the needles will be placed at points determined by your TCM diagnosis and treatment goals.

    • Once any needles are in, we begin by cleaning the face to remove any makeup, oil, or impurities. This ensures that the skin is ready for treatment.

    • A facial oil will be applied to the collarbone and neck area to ensure the facial cups and gua sha tool glide smoothly over the skin.

    • We start cupping over the collarbone and neck area. This first step ensures that the lymphatic pathways are open so the fluid drains efficiently.

    • Once the cupping is finished, we move on to using a smooth-edged gua sha tool.

    • The strokes used on the face are upwards and outwards, but downward strokes are used on the neck.

    • After gua sha, a very tiny cup (about the size of a pencil eraser) will be used around the lips and eyes.

    • Once the cupping and gua sha are completed, there will be a face mask applied (there are 5 different choices, depending on your treatment goals). The mask will stay on for about 10 minutes, and during this time, an LED rainbow light will be placed above the face.

    • If receiving body acupuncture, the needles will be removed during this time. With the remaining time, you will receive a gentle gua sha scalp massage.

    • The LED light is removed, and the mask is removed using warm towels.

    • Topical product applications will finish off the session.

    • Relaxation: Throughout the session, you’ll likely experience deep relaxation. Many people find these treatments incredibly soothing and may even fall asleep.

    • Duration: A session without acupuncture is 45 minutes and a session with acupuncture is 60 minutes.

  • After the Session

    • Immediate Effects: Your skin may be slightly red due to the increased circulation, but the redness usually subsides quickly. Immediately noticeable results will include reduced puffiness, improved skin tone, and a more radiant glow.

    • Post-Treatment Care: Aftercare advice will include avoiding heavy makeup, sweating, or sun exposure for about 12-24 hours after the session. A facial sunscreen is recommended to be put on immediately after the session. You will also be encouraged to drink plenty of water.

    • Frequency of Treatments: Session frequency will be based on your goals and skin condition. Once you are happy with your results, we will incorporate a maintenance plan to maintain those results.

A facial cupping and gua sha session with an acupuncturist offers a holistic approach to skincare that blends beauty with wellness. By understanding what to expect, you can fully embrace the experience, enjoying both the immediate and long-term benefits these ancient techniques provide. Whether you seek a radiant complexion, reduced facial tension, or overall relaxation, these treatments can be a valuable addition to your self-care routine.
